Madeline& Shannon case study H/W

The language used to describe Shannon and Madeline contrast.
In Madelines story it was said that "The mother of missing toddler Madeleine McCann is so traumatized by the kidnap of her daughter that she cannot bear to be parted from her two-year-old twins at night"
whilst with Shannon's story it was reported that "Detectives investigating the alleged abduction of Shannon Matthews have been granted more time to question her mother on suspicion of perverting the course of justice"
Madeline's mother is portrayed to be very maternal and caring mother whom intentions are solely to find her missing child additionally by adding that all she wants to do is find her child by suggesting that she cannot be without her child brings about the motherly bond that they have which allows people to sympathies with her lose; whilst on the other hand in the brief description of Shannon's case the word "allege" was used which suggest that abduction may or may not be real therefor the underlining meaning of this is that the abduction may or may not be real. This is a contrast because Madeline's case was given the benefit of the doubt and was also shown more compassion.

For Madeline's picture that was used of the mother and daughter having their leisure time signified their bond and relationship, linking back to the text of the mother being nondetachable. whilst Shannon's picture is a head shot of both Shannon and her mother which is restrictive to people sympathizing and creating an image of the mothers relationship with her daughter therefore the story is less emotive. this is contrast to the picture used for Madeline as the relationship conveyed have different effects on the story.
Furthermore the fact that the mugshot is a mid shot is submissive as it doesn't give much away the fact that they have used two different pictures and haven't used one separate shot of two together again implies their relationship being not that close as of the relationship of Madeline and her mother. The mid-shot for the mother doesn't show her giving direct address which is almost reflects her hiding something; the shot isn't flattering therefore building an image for the public that she doesn't care about her appearance additionally the image was taken without her knowledge which is not fair to her.
Whilst Madeline's mother gave an image where her and her daughter were smiling portraying her as a good mother additionally the long shot connotes allot more body language and emotion.
From the reading Halls theory is relevant as the social class difference and the mere fact that Shannon's mother collects benefits, different baby fathers and her past with men makes her seem like an irresponsible mother, so her betrayal in the article fits what they know of her.
The audience toward the McCanns are supposed to sympathise with the family the dominant meaning is that the they have lost their child however with the Matthew's the subtle hints give lea way to question the situation.
