Audience effect theories

The media has been criticised since the rise of the mass media and the effect it has on the audience as it's seen as a form of a passive (never question) mass, as it brainwashes by the message that floods the media.

Audience effect theories and the hypodermic needle:
- the media are powerful and negative forces who control the masses

Bandura's study used the doll called Bobo:
- the study suggested that media are passive  (the experiment was done with children age 3-5)
- emotions are learnt (how much of what we watch is learnt through media)
- the study was to do with aggression
- the study showed that the children replicated the same actions shown to them with the adult beating the doll
- whilst other children were shown an adult playing calmly with no violence with the same doll as a result they did the same

What is moral panic and where did it come from;
- Stanley Cohen
- when members of a society culture become outraged, fearful and upset the challenges and menace posed.

Mean world syndrome - mean world syndrome is a term coined by George Gerbner to describe a
phenomenon whereby violence-related content of mass media makes viewers believe that the world is more dangerous than it actually is. Mean world syndrome is one of the main conclusions of cultivation theory.

Cultivation theory - cultivation theory examines the long-term effects of television. "The primary proposition of cultivation theory states that the more time people spend 'living' in the television world, the more likely they are to believe social reality aligns with reality portrayed on television."

Mindcraft questions H/W

Conglomerate - a company who own other companies
Vertical integration - a business in which the company control every aspect of production
Horizontal integration - you don't get the specialism of marketing which means you have to buy this from the other companies
1) The game helps special needs autistic children as it's creative with no rules which means there's endless possibilities  furthermore, the game taught the children basic skills. The game benefited autistic children more because they can respond to the simple visuals, open design and logical interlocking system.
2) The features in the educational version are where students learn about geography, agriculture, architecture and physics.
3Why have copycats of minecraft been less successful - because Mojang's vision and simple purity can't compare to others attempts additionally, clones tend to add a lot of visual information to the textures whilst Minecraft is kind of cartoony which plays with your imagination.
4Modding community - customised versions of the game which share the new stories, adventures and textures this is made available online where players can easily download these files into Minecraft
5The importance of the sense of ownership - because in the game you are free to do whatever you like allows you to feel as though you own the game because you control what goes on. Which is important because it brings you closer to the game.
6Minecraft expansion - every year features are added giving players new things to explore and play with e.g material.

Left & Right wing

This is left wing because they support lower taxes so by publishing this the are influencing people to vote for brexit as it follows the way in which the left wing think.

This is right wing because they have a very traditionally view on what the family. They consider gay marriage to be a negative connotation when it comes to the family. The headline makes it look like the family would be extinct because of this choice which is very extreme and negative.

Genre Theory

About the genre theory
04/01/18
Steven neal - genres and about repetition
Popular cinema relies on audience finding pleasure in difference and repetition
Genre theory are about what they are, and about how and why they are created, change, endure or decline
Neale argues that genre is a process by which generic codes and conventions are shared by producers and audience through repetition in media products.

Genre stages
1st stages - the primitive, the formative stage in which the genre's characteristics are first established.
2nd stage- the classical, the genre at its peak, with generic qualities refined.
3rd stage- the revisionist, which scrutinizes and reevaluates, often in a critical way, the conventions that typify the genre.
4th stage- the parodic, in which the genre is satirized in a consciously self- reflexive, tongue-in-cheek manner.
